Congratulations to the 2025 Alumni Excellence Award Winner, Associate Professor Michael Noetel! Michael completed his Master of Applied Psychology while living at Emmanuel College in 2009. His early career focused on behaviour change research, particularly examining how education and exercise could better improve outcomes for disadvantaged populations. Throughout his career Michael has garnered multiple national teaching awards, including a prestigious Australian Award for University Teaching, recognising his impact to psychology education. His research has been particularly impactful for those experiencing mental illness and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, demonstrating his commitment to translating academic excellence into tangible social benefits. In 2020, he joined the board as Chair of Effective Altruism Australia, an organisation trying to help Australians maximise their social impact. Under his leadership, the small organisation has directed tens of millions of dollars to the world’s most effective charities. Whether through his research, teaching, or philanthropic leadership, Michael demonstrates how research and evidence can create real-world impact. (fb)
