Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action Incorporated

Overview Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action Incorporated (BSCA) is a nonprofit organization established in 2018 following the Tathra District Fire. The organization comprises bushfire survivors, firefighters, and their families who are united in advocating for urgent climate action in response to escalating bushfire threats exacerbated by climate change.

Mission and Goals The mission of BSCA is to amplify the voices of those impacted by bushfires, calling for meaningful climate action by governments, businesses, and individuals. They aim to create a safer future for all Australians by promoting the transition away from fossil fuels and towards sustainable practices. BSCA encourages collaboration across political and community sectors to ensure lasting environmental changes.

Key Activities and Achievements

  • Legal Advocacy: BSCA achieved a significant victory in the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales. They argued that the NSW Environmental Protection Agency had a duty to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, leading to a court-ordered climate policy and action plan. BSCA is involved in monitoring the implementation of this policy.
  • Political Engagement: The organization has contributed to federal elections by organizing local events and candidate forums, particularly in marginal electorates. This has helped raise awareness about climate issues among voters and policymakers.
  • International Advocacy: BSCA gained international attention at COP26 and COP27 by highlighting climate-related issues, including the influence of fossil fuel companies and the impacts on First Nations communities.

Community Impact BSCA provides a platform for survivors to share their stories and advocate for change. The organization supports other concerned individuals in raising their voices against climate change, fostering a community-driven movement for environmental safety and sustainability. Through personal narratives and collective action, BSCA emphasizes the urgent need for climate action to protect Australian communities from the rising threats of bushfires and other extreme weather events.

Structure and Operations

BSCA operates as a non-partisan entity, maintaining a diverse team of staff and volunteers. The organization is committed to raising awareness about climate-related impacts through media engagement and community outreach. While it invites collaboration from all sectors, its primary focus remains on pushing for systemic changes that prioritize climate resilience and sustainability.
