👩🌾What’s up with PMP? Now over halfway through our 2025 Property Management Planning workshops, it’s a good time to revisit what participants have been up to. Following the introductory planning workshop, attendees have been out and about at farms across the Huon Valley, digging deep into the principles of healthy soils and pastures and how to apply these lessons to their own plans. Being out on a farm is a great way to add an extra layer of understanding to some of the key lessons, including: 🪱The interconnected importance of soil chemistry and biology and how soil structure influences plant growth and soil biology 🐄Decisions that can damage soil structure (such as allowing livestock to compact waterlogged winter soils, overgrazing pastures) 🍀The importance of maintaining over 80% groundcover - particularly in early autumn 🌦Developing a future-proofed farm water budget to manage demand across the year and the effects of a changing climate 🌱Considerations in pasture management – including when and how much to graze, planning for native browsers, and what soil measurements to take. With two more sessions to go before winter arrives and our 2025 workshop wraps up, there’s still a lot of ground to cover. Our main topics will be how to manage weeds, and approaches to support native vegetation - and how these actions can improve farm productivity and sustainability. This project is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Natural Heritage Trust under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program. (fb)
Don't forget about this weekend's native bees and beneficial bugs workshop in Moonah. A great family-friendly event to get you thinking and planning your garden over the winter months so you can transform it into a beneficial insect haven. (fb)
