The Genealogical Society of Victoria Inc.
The Genealogical Society of Victoria Inc. (GSV) is a prominent Australian nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and assisting family history research in the state of Victoria. Established in 1941, the society has grown from a small group of enthusiasts to an organization with approximately 6,000 members, including staff and volunteers passionate about genealogy and historical research.
History and Mission
Founded with the aim of supporting genealogical research and preserving family histories, the society has become a hub for those interested in uncovering their ancestral roots, particularly within Victoria. The GSV serves as a resource center and community for genealogists, providing educational programs, research assistance, and access to extensive collections of genealogical records.
Collections and Resources
The GSV houses the largest family history collection in Victoria, including approximately 18,000 books, 56,000 microfiche, 1,350 microfilms, and a wide variety of pamphlets, maps, periodicals, CDs, and computer databases. The society's library is equipped with over 30 microfiche readers, eight microfilm readers, and 30 computers accessible to visitors.
Significant digital resources include over 1,300 digitized family histories and genealogical charts available online exclusively to members. The society maintains several unique databases and indexes, such as:
-
Milestones: A comprehensive Victorian database of over 1 million entries covering births, baptisms, marriages, deaths, burials, and related records, including church registers, newspaper notices, obituaries, and cemetery transcriptions.
-
Genealogical Index of Names (GIN): Containing over 3 million references to individuals found in the society’s holdings and other Victorian resources, indexed from directories, newspapers, hospital, criminal, passenger, parliamentary, school, and pioneer records.
-
VicFamilies: A register documenting members' research interests in Victorian ancestry, listing more than 44,000 names.
-
Scottish Places: A database of over 3,000 Scottish parishes and localities linked to the society’s collection of 1841 and 1851 census records and parish registers.
The GSV also offers a searchable online catalogue for its extensive collection and provides various research services to assist with family history tracing both within Australia and internationally.
Activities and Services
The Genealogical Society of Victoria organizes a broad range of educational workshops, classes, special interest groups, and webinars designed to support genealogists at all levels. It publishes a quarterly journal, Ancestor, containing articles on family history research methods, recent discoveries, and updates on society activities.
Members benefit from access to exclusive online databases, podcasts of weekly talks, research guides, and discounts on events and genealogy-related products. The society's online store caters to a global audience with resources and materials for family historians worldwide.
Contribution to Genealogical Research
As a key institution in Victoria’s genealogical community, the GSV plays a vital role in preserving historical records and facilitating genealogical research. Its extensive collections and supportive community make it an indispensable resource for those seeking to explore their family history, especially within Victoria but also beyond, including other Australian states and international contexts.
This summary reflects the Genealogical Society of Victoria’s commitment to genealogical education, research facilitation, and preservation of historical family records, contributing significantly to the heritage and personal histories of its members and the wider public.[1][2][3][5]
