The Mini Farm Project

We're growing food for the those in need. We are a charity that converts under-utilised spaces into urban farms to grow food for those in need. Please check our Facebook Page for volunteer events. Our work during this financial year focused on maintaining our existing farm in Samford to grow food for people in need and sell a portion to help fund the operation. We conducted a number of onsite tours to showcase that we can replicate this farm around our region to grow more food to feed people in need. We have been working on a number of fundraising activities and events to attract interest and funding to continue what we do. Through attending various events, meetings and workshops we have increased our profile in South East Queensland and created a volunteer team to assist with administrative and fundraising activities. We have also half funded our planned Loganlea State High School Charity farm and plan to start development in early 2023. New farms are being planned for Wamuran, Coolum, North Harbour and in Logan with plans to create fundraising activities to fund these projects and employ staff.

The Mini Farm Project Ltd

Overview

The Mini Farm Project Ltd is a nonprofit organization operating in Australia, primarily focused on addressing food insecurity by establishing a network of charity farms across Queensland. Founded in 2014, this initiative aims to provide fresh produce to those in need while fostering sustainable agricultural practices and community engagement.

Mission and Activities

The organization's mission is to create a sustainable future where no Queenslander goes hungry. To achieve this, The Mini Farm Project cultivates a variety of fresh produce, including fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs, and bush foods. These products are donated at no cost to food relief charities, ensuring consistent access to nutritious food throughout the year.

Beyond food production, the farms serve as educational hubs and centers for community engagement. They offer programs that include Work for the Dole, university research collaborations, learning initiatives for school students, volunteer opportunities, and programs for participants under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Additionally, the organization employs long-term unemployed individuals alongside qualified farmers, promoting job creation and skill development.

Goals and Impact

The Mini Farm Project aligns with several of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on both environmental and social challenges. Key objectives include:

  • Future-proofing the local food system and supply chain: By establishing a network of urban and regenerative farms, the project aims to enhance resilience against natural disasters and climate change.
  • Building soil integrity: Through sustainable growing methods, the project contributes to environmental sustainability and improved soil health.
  • Community outreach and education: Providing educational programs and engaging the community in agricultural practices and environmental stewardship.

Operations

The Mini Farm Project currently operates farms in Samford and Loganlea, with plans for further expansion across Queensland. A notable example of its success is Millen Farm at Samford, which supplies between 20kg to 50kg of free fresh produce weekly to Meals on Wheels Moreton Bay. Local residents also have the opportunity to purchase fresh produce directly from the farm.

Recognition

As a registered charity, The Mini Farm Project Ltd has garnered recognition for its innovative approach to addressing food insecurity and fostering sustainable agriculture in Australia.
