The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award - Australia
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award – Australia (Duke of Ed) is a youth development program operating nationally, with state and territory divisions including The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award - Australia (ACT) Incorporated. Founded in Australia in 1959 through the initiative of Sir Adrien Curlewis, the program expanded nationally by 1962 with support from the National Fitness Council and a £2,000 grant from Prime Minister Robert Menzies[1][2].

History
The Award was introduced to Australia shortly after its 1956 UK inception by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and educationalist Kurt Hahn[5]. Early participants could transfer qualifications from organizations like Scouts Australia, accelerating their progress through Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels[5]. The first Australian Gold Award was presented in March 1963 aboard HMS Britannia by Prince Philip[5].

Program Structure
Participants aged 14–24 complete activities across five criteria:

  • Volunteering: Community service
  • Physical Recreation: Sport or fitness
  • Skills: Creative or practical abilities
  • Expedition: Team-based outdoor journey
  • Residential (Gold Level): Shared activity in unfamiliar environment[1]

Governance
State-based entities like the ACT division operate under a national framework. The Coordinating Council established in 1962 evolved into the current governance model, maintaining membership in the International Award Association since 1988[2][3].

Recognition
The Award emphasizes non-formal education, with over 30,000 Australians annually commencing Bronze, Silver, or Gold challenges[1]. Its curriculum addresses youth development through experiential learning principles derived from Hahn's philosophies[1][5].
