Brisbane Catchments Network Inc

Brisbane Catchments Network Inc. (BCN) is an independent not-for-profit organisation based in Brisbane, Australia, that represents a coalition of catchment groups within the Brisbane region. Founded to unify and support these groups, BCN serves as an umbrella organisation for 12 member catchment groups that collectively cover all the major streams flowing into the Brisbane River in the greater metropolitan area.

Purpose and Activities

The principal aim of the Brisbane Catchments Network is to provide a unified voice and strategic direction for the preservation and restoration of Brisbane’s creeks and river systems. The network fosters collaboration among its members and partners, which include government bodies, industry stakeholders, and other non-profit organisations. This collaborative approach facilitates community engagement, resource sharing, and coordinated conservation efforts across catchment areas.

BCN is actively involved in on-ground restoration projects throughout the Brisbane River corridor, supporting the maintenance and rehabilitation of natural vegetation and waterway health. It also develops community-led environmental strategies and provides strategic advice to local, state, and federal governments to promote sustainable natural resource management in line with the South East Queensland (SEQ) Natural Resource Management Plan.

Community Engagement

Community involvement is central to BCN’s operations, with many of its member groups being largely volunteer-based. The network encourages education, engagement, and enthusiasm for Brisbane’s natural environment, aiming to increase community capacity to care for local waterways. Monthly meetings are held to facilitate knowledge exchange, promote discussion among member groups, and strengthen collaborative efforts.

Governance and Structure

Brisbane Catchments Network Inc. operates as a registered non-profit organisation under Australian law, with an Australian Business Number (ABN) of 91699125102RR0001. Its structure supports the coordination, cooperation, and information sharing among member groups to maximize the impact of catchment management activities in the region.

Impact

Through its integrated approach and partnerships, BCN plays a key role in enhancing biodiversity and ecological health within Brisbane’s catchments. The network supports monitoring and repair initiatives for natural vegetation along waterways, contributing to the overall goal of fostering a healthy and resilient urban river environment.
