Citizens for Juvenile Justice, Inc. Action Alert - Raise the Age Hearing September 23rd! The legislature's Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hybrid hearing for the Senate version of the Raise the Age bill (S.1061) for Tuesday, September 23rd starting at 1pm at the State House and virtually (Room A-2 and virtual)! The deadline to register to testify has passed but you can still sign up at the State House in-person during the hearing. You can also show your support for Raise the Age by submitting a letter of support to the Committee, cc both your State Representative and State Senator. "The wounds experienced by youth in adult prisons don’t only harm them, they potentially hurt the rest of us as well. Physical and sexual abuse of adolescents in adult prisons and jails is significantly higher than in juvenile facilities and life expectancy is lower, meaning that adult imprisonment literally kills kids. Not surprisingly, research summarized by the Centers for Disease Control found that “the adult criminal justice system typically increases rather than decreases rates of violence” among youth tried as adults."
