Today, on International Nurses Day—the culmination of Nurses Week and the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale—we honor the legacy of those who dedicate their lives to healing. In the 19th century, Nightingale introduced her groundbreaking Environmental Theory, emphasizing that clean air, safe water, hygiene, and a peaceful environment are essential to patient recovery. By advocating for these basic conditions, she was also calling for equitable access to healthy environments, laying the groundwork for longer, healthier lives for all. At NYAM, we proudly carry forward this mission, and we are committed to addressing the link between climate and health. Since our first published report on maternal health in 1937, NYAM has been a steadfast advocate for the health and wellness of birthing mothers and their children. Today, we reflect on a report from the American Child Health Association of New York, “The Expectant Mother in the House of Health,” dating back to 1926.
