THE AFO PRIDES ITSELF AS SERVING AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE PROFESSIONAL AND THE AMATEUR ORNITHOLOGIST. THE ORGANIZATION'S MEMBERSHIP AND GOVERNING COUNCIL CONSIST OF BOTH AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL ORNITHOLOGISTS, IN RECOGNITION OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS THAT BOTH MAKE TO ORNITHOLOGY.
