In 1988, the Holyoke Canoe Club celebrated its 100th anniversary! To mark the occasion, Congressman Silvio O. Conte - a Pittsfield native, environmental advocate, and avid fisherman - honored the Club on May 28, 1988 with a letter and an American flag which was flown over the U.S. Capitol. It was a meaningful tribute to the Club’s legacy along the Connecticut River, especially from someone who worked so hard to protect these waters. Conte championed efforts to restore Atlantic salmon to the river and fought to preserve the natural beauty of our region. Since 1937, members of Congress have been able to request flags be flown over the Capitol to celebrate milestones, honor community contributions, and recognize moments that matter. For us, that flag symbolized 100 years of outdoor recreation, connection and a strong community. Founded in 1888, the Holyoke Canoe Club will turn 137 years old in 2025.
