The "Island" and the Tamworth Residents Area, CLC's two public lake access areas on the eastern shore of Chocorua Lake, are temporarily closed to all visitors for the next two weeks. CLC has begun the second phase of our extensive $200k Shoreline Restoration project, which we started last fall to restore sections of the eastern shoreline damaged by heavy human usage and suffering erosion from increasingly frequent significant rain events. This erosion creates risks to the trees and shrubs along the shoreline, impacting the habitat of the many species that live near the lake or migrate through, and also poses risks to lake water quality as natural protections against stormwater runoff from Route 16 are compromised. Last fall, CLC contractors stabilized the shoreline with granite boulders and slabs and GroSoxx, amended the soil for greater water retention, and planted hundreds of native trees, shrubs, and plants. Yesterday, CLC contractors began a second period of intensive planting. For safety reasons, the Island and Tamworth Residents Area will be closed while machinery is present, most likely through mid-June. The Grove remains open throughout for swimming and putting in kayaks and canoes. Thank you for your patience.
