Written in 1998, an article by Anne Cunningham and Keith Stanovich hypothesized that children develop a larger vocabulary by reading than through spoken word or direct instruction. They studied samples of language from various sources, including children's books, courtroom testimony, and TV shows, to determine the number of "rare" words in each. Among their conclusions? It's vital to give children a successful start in reading and we must provide all kids with as many positive reading experiences as possible.
