📊 Lake Winnipesaukee Weekly Report Card The surface temp is approximately 6°F lower than last week and the current lake level is 1.24 feet below full lake and about half a foot below the seasonal average for late August. The outflow at Lakeport Dam has been decreased to the minimum of 250 cubic feet per second (cfs), the equivalent of 112,208 gallons per minute. Sometimes, especially in late summer, this mandated outflow far exceeds the inflow coming into the lake. The timing and extent of seasonal drawdown is complex. Under deeded water rights dating back to the 1800s, hydropower dams on the Winnipesaukee River are guaranteed a minimum release of 250 cfs. Cyanobacteria Update: The fuzzy green Gloeotrichia colonies that were widespread last week have dispersed with the cooler, breezier weather. It’s been more than a week since NHDES or LWA received new reports, and all Gloeotrichia observations have been cleared from the Healthy Swimming Mapper. The most recent cyanobacteria sample posted on the Healthy Swimming Mapper is from August 13th, showing the presence of Stigonematales. Unlike Gloeotrichia, which floats in the water column, Stigonematales are a benthic (bottom-dwelling) cyanobacteria. They typically grow attached to rocks, plants, or sediments, but can become dislodged by wind and wave action, making them more visible in the water. While not all species are harmful, some types of Stigonematales are capable of producing toxins. That’s why it’s important to recognize what they look like and to exercise caution if you see unusual growths or mats floating near shorelines. Report any potential sightings to NHDES using their HAB Reporting Form. (fb)
