🇺🇸 This Memorial Day, we honor the legacy of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the only all-Black, all-women battalion to serve overseas during WWII. These trailblazing women cleared a six-month mail backlog in just three months, processing an average of 65,000 pieces of mail per shift—a vital lifeline connecting soldiers to loved ones back home. Their success not only boosted morale across the front lines, it paved the way for Black women to serve in the military. 🏅 Last month, the 6888th was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal at the U.S. Capitol. Gateways President & Artistic Director Alex Laing and Director of Development Latanya Afolayan had the honor of witnessing this historic tribute, alongside hundreds of family members and supporters. 👏🏾Today, we remember and salute all who have served and sacrificed—and especially those hidden figures of African descent, whose courage was long unsung.
