Do turtles have noses? This kind of question pops into our heads before bed. The answer is yes—Check out the pair of nostrils on this snapping turtle and painted turtle, oddly cute with a little flare. A defining trait of tetrapods like these turtles is the presence of a nasal cavity. Distinct from mammals, turtles primarily breathe out of their mouths. The function of their nose varies depending on how each species has adapted to its environment. Many put their noses to use in olfaction (smelling), especially to sniff out food and potential mates. Sea turtles also use them for water management. A few ways you can help turtles: Advocate for habitat protections, eliminate or reduce single use plastics, and take care to watch out for them on the road.
