Inspired by a news story about a New York-based photographer who illuminated Holocaust survivors’ headshots on the sides of high-rise buildings, Marina Polyakov, a resident services coordinator at Center Communities of Brookline, sought to create a way for Russian-speaking survivors at the Julian and Carol Feinberg Cohen Residences to document their unique experiences. She decided she wanted pre-war photographs and quotes from residents to be the focal point of this project. Marina took 12 residents’ photos and their stories and displayed them on a large poster for the greater community to see. The stories included some who witnessed extreme war violence, some who survived near-starvation and illness, and many more. The project helped the survivors feel seen and heard and gave everyone else on the campus a window into this dark part of history. The project was part of Center Communities of Brookline’s Yom HaShoah events. Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, is a solemn day commemorating the approximately six million Jews and five million others who perished in the Holocaust. (fb)
