By age 4, children already have ideas about race and gender, and those early beliefs can shape a lifetime of perception and behavior. At Haverford, Associate Professor of Psychology Ryan Lei studies how children learn to combine social categories, such as race and gender, and what that reveals about bias. With support from two grants from the National Science Foundation, Lei has explored this work in depth while also engaging more than 50 student researchers through hands-on fieldwork, data analysis, and national conference presentations. In 2020, poet Marc Zegans ’83 was preparing for the Manship Artists Residency, which would take him across the country to Starfield, a 15-acre estate in Gloucester, Mass. Then COVID-19 turned things upside down. The residency closed its doors to out-of-state visitors, allowing only brief, solo visits from local artists. Rather than treat the residency as a total loss, however, Zegans came up with a novel idea: a virtual residency and collaboration between himself and photographer Tsar Fedorsky. The result is the just-published fine art volume “Ghost Book.” The project, featured in the most recent issue of Haverford Magazine, explores memory, absence, and the spiritual traces we leave behind.
