The turn is followed by a simple descending scale that leads to one of the most extraordinary moments in music-- a chorale played by the whole string section that is as captivating as it is beautiful. The chorale feels both simple and extraordinary in its sophisticated disorienting diversions that seem to take us to other worlds. At the same time, throughout this chorale, the opening’s expressive turn reappears, embedded in the inner voices, sometimes in its entirety, and sometimes in fragments. These details add a layer of expression through the voice leading of the chorale—details that pressure us to slow down the passage of time to consider them individually and in relation to the chorale as a whole. Mahler has so much to say here, and to make sure we hear every meaning in every nuanced gesture with absolute clarity, Mahler progressively dismantles our perception of the passage of time as we progress through the 185 measures of passionate, beautiful and introspective music.
