What does a truly inclusive future of work for informal workers look like? And what do worker-led organizations need to shape this future? Last week marked the first session of “Rethinking the Future of Workers: Voices from the Ground Up,” a new monthly virtual roundtable launched by the Tunisia Inclusive Labor Institute, Self Employed Women's Association-SEWA, and GFI’s Inclusive Labor Institute. Asma Ben Hassen (GFI/TILI) introduced the session’s framing on the “future of work,” followed by Jyoti Macwan (SEWA) and Jeannette Nyiramasengesho (Sytrieci Rwanda), who discussed the risks of informal workers being excluded and the barriers to their representation in decision-making. Leaders from unions and worker-led organizations shared their experiences and questions on building an inclusive future of work. Thank you to those who participated! Global Fairness Initiative Workercentered Workerled The working poor especially women know more than anyone the challenges they face and the solutions they need so before we act we listen. GFIs initiatives are workerled because they are informed by the voice of workers designed in collaboration with worker organizations and informal unions and implemented by those in and from the communities we serve. By listening first GFIs work is rooted in the realities of the poor not a framework or theory of change. For over 20 years GFI has worked with workerled partners have representing millions of workers to create a more just secure future of work where rights resilience selfreliance and dignity are foundational so that communities of promise become centers of prosperity.
