#OnThisDay May 23, 1911 Aviation pioneer Earle Ovington made headlines on Long Island when he raced—and beat—a Long Island Rail Road express train. Flying his Blériot monoplane from Belmont Park over Garden City and Mineola, Ovington covered the ten-mile distance in just 12 minutes, while the train took 22 minutes to complete the same stretch. This daring flight showcased the growing speed and potential of aviation and added another chapter to Long Island’s place in early flight history.
