💚 Groundwork Somerville’s Green Team recently joined Groundwork USA and other GW trusts from across the country for a week of service and camping in Yellowstone National Park! 🏕️ 🛠️ Led by the dedicated park rangers with the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC), our crew installed 30 bear-proof boxes 🐻 in a heavily trafficked campground. This work decreases the likelihood of human interaction with bears, protecting both park visitors and wildlife. We also collected samples of dragonfly larvae to contribute to the Dragonfly Mercury Project, a nationwide citizen science project 🔬 to measure and monitor mercury levels in waterways across the country. As a team, we dug holes, mixed cement, sifted through muddy riverbeds, and moved these 400lb metal boxes! 🏞️ In addition to service work, the Green Team explored the park, spoke with Lakota artist Kelly Looking Horse at the Tribal Heritage Center, swam in Yellowstone Lake, ⛰️hiked Mount Washburn, saw 🐐wildlife 🦬, visited Old Faithful, spoke with and learned about Yellowstone’s extensive indigenous human history and unique geology 🌋. 🫶 The Green Team was challenged and rewarded by the beauty and fun of giving back and connecting with our Groundwork community.
