First-time volunteers find their way to MDS responses in a variety of ways. Vincent Demers read a volunteer call for a Constance Bay, Ontario, flood response in Behind the Hammer, MDS’ quarterly magazine. From Simcoe, Ontario, Vincent had received copies of MDS’ magazine for 25 years — ever since his son first volunteered with a Roman Catholic school group. His son’s experience had been positive, and Vincent’s late wife thought they should try volunteering with the organization in retirement. He volunteered for the first time as a weekly volunteer this April. Vincent signed up to gain “new experiences and meet new people. I have to get out of my comfort zone once in a while.” At two days in, the 72-year-old was already considering volunteering with MDS again. “The people are great,” he said. #MDSResponds #RespondRebuildRestore #MennoniteDisasterService (fb)
