✨ Join us next Tuesday, June 10th for our monthly meeting! Remember to bring your blooming plants for our show table 🌸 Meetings are open to all - nonmembers too! 📄 Topic: Catasetums 👤 Speaker: Tim Culbertson of Oceanside Orchids 📆 Date: June 10, 2025 at 7:00 PM EST 📍Location: 117 Swanton Street, Winchester, MA 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧: Recently, I’ve partnered with Fred Clarke to greatly expand the selection of paphs at Sunset Valley Orchids through the acquisition of significant parts of Sam Tsui’s collection at Orchid Inn. I currently manage the Paphs at SVO, and do hybridizing in a wide range of genera including Cattleya, Catasetinae and Masdevallia. I love meeting other people who like orchids too, and doing so often finds me traveling to shows, vendors, and peoples’ greenhouses to see the latest and greatest in new hybrids and species. I like to be involved in plants as much as possible: in addition to Longwood, I’ve worked at the Smithsonian Institution tending to their orchids, and for years for the United States National Arboretum, collecting rare non-orchid plants. Tim says “Catasetums are fantastic plants, with an incredible diversity in colors and forms. At SVO, we understand that growing space is limited, so we are working hard to produce the best miniature Catasetums available. This presentation includes some of the important parents in miniature Catasetum breeding, interesting directions for intergenerics, wonderful photos of the pathway we’ve taken to achieve miniature results, some natural history of this incredible alliance, and lots of information on Catasetum culture. ! By the end of this presentation, you will have a new appreciation of their beautiful flowers and ease-of-growth”. Tim will have lots of plants of this alliance for sale. (fb)
✨ Join us next Tuesday May 13th for our May monthly meeting! Remember to bring your blooming plants for our show table 🌸 As a reminder, meetings are open to all - nonmembers too! 📄 Topic: Managing Your Orchid Collection 👤 Speaker: Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids 📆 Date: May 13, 2025 at 7:00 PM EST 📍Location: 117 Swanton Street, Winchester, MA 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧: Alan Koch owns and operates Gold Country Orchids where he specializes in miniature and compact Cattleya’s along with miniature species. Alan started growing orchids in 1969 with 3 Cymbidiums given to him by an aunt. While in college he became interested in other orchids and discovered many would grow outdoors in Southern California. He has moved five times as his orchid obsession has led to the need for more growing space. With the last move, he purchased 10 acres of land in Lincoln, California for his 250,000 orchids. He is recognized as an expert in the Brazilian Cattleya alliance and a trend setter in miniature compact and Cattleya breeding. Alan has been published in the Orchid Digest, the American Orchid Society magazine, as well as many International Publications. He has also been published in several proceedings of the World Orchid Conference. He is an internationally known speaker. He is a past member of the AOS Judging Committee, and the Research Committee, as well as an Emeritus Judge and is Training Coordinator for the California Sierra Nevada Judging Center. Alan also served two terms on the Orchid Digest Executive Committee and 3 terms on the Board of Directors, as well as two terms as a Trustee for the AOS. (fb)
