Canopy
Canopy is a nonprofit organization focused on planting and maintaining trees in urban environments. Its primary mission is to expand the urban tree canopy in Midpeninsula communities, benefiting local residents by creating healthier environments and providing shade.
Mission and Vision
Canopy aims to ensure that every resident of the Midpeninsula can enjoy the benefits of trees. The vision is for a future where everyone can walk, play, and thrive under healthy trees. This is achieved through tree planting, stewardship, education, and advocacy, particularly in areas lacking these resources due to historical development and urbanization patterns.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Canopy prioritizes work in communities that historically have had limited access to thriving urban forests. The organization emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion through its policies and community engagement efforts, addressing systemic barriers that have resulted from competing priorities or limited resources in these areas.
Partnerships and Operations
Canopy collaborates with national and local stakeholders, including Cal Fire, California ReLeaf, and the Alliance for Community Trees (ACT), to ensure its practices are aligned with the best standards in the field. The organization relies on a small professional staff, a dedicated board, advisors, community partners, and a large network of volunteers to manage its programs effectively.
Impact
Through its efforts, Canopy has had a positive impact on local communities by enhancing environmental quality and fostering community engagement. The organization continuously seeks support from volunteers and donors to expand its mission and improve the environmental health of its service areas.

🌳We're hiring: Trees of Life Network Coordinator Canopy's Trees of Life project aims to bridge faith and forestry in East Palo Alto. In Trees of Life, Canopy and community faith leaders will collaborate to design a multistep engagement and tree stewardship plan that centers a community responsive forestry program. The Trees of Life Network Coordinator will be responsible for partnering with East Palo Alto’s faith-based community to grow the urban canopy on congregation property and the residences of congregation members through fruit tree distribution events and community tree plantings. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of urban forestry and its intersection with faith-based communities, to work collaboratively with others, and to affect meaningful change in our communities and the environment. This is a temporary full-time position ending December 31, 2027. To learn more and apply, please visit canopy.org/jobs (fb)
As the rain begins to soften the ground, something powerful happens at Canopy: our new planting season begins. And this fall, we step into a new chapter; not just planting hope, but planting impact. Planting community. Planting justice. Planting the future we all deserve. Last weekend, more than 70 members of our community came together at Los Robles–Ronald McNair Academy in East Palo Alto to plant 12 new trees and celebrate the start of Canopy’s 29th planting season. It was a reminder that we are not only greening schoolyards – we are investing in children, in neighborhoods, and in a more resilient future for us all. Thank you to the community volunteers, including staff and families of Los Robles-Ronald McNair Academy, for planting with us! This planting project was made possible with funding provided by the @calfire Urban and Community Forestry Program. (fb)
