Yesterday, JCIE USA’s Kazuyo Kato and Stephen McHugh met with the 8 Japanese American National Museum's 2025 Watanabe Democracy Fellows at The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation in Washington, DC. The two of them were joined by the National Endowment for Democracy's Technology and Democracy Director Daniel O'Maley, who introduced NED’s work and covered their activities in the technology space. It was a great opportunity to share JCIE’s efforts to engage Japanese policymakers and youth leaders, and details of the launch of a new multi-party Diet Caucus on #UniversalValues in the #IndoPacific region in May. Lots of new insights were offered during our online briefing earlier this week on #Japan’s #UpperHouse #Election (#HouseofCouncillors), which resulted in the ruling coalition losing its majority (see detailed breakdown of results below). We are grateful to Daniel Smith (Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania), Noriko Akiyama (Senior Political Writer at 朝日新聞（The Asahi Shimbun）), and Ken Moriyasu (Washington Correspondent for Nikkei Asia) for their unique comments and analysis. Our participants enjoyed the timely discussion, which included an overview of the outcome in terms of voter turnout and demographics (which also helped us gain a nuanced understanding of the rise of Sanseito and their future viability), touched on #WomenInPolitics, and considered the implications of the results for the future of Japan’s political leadership, foreign policy, and #usjapanrelations.
