Today marks the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall resistance, which sparked the worldwide LGBT movement. It is commemorated in NYC with a parade, once referred to as a “march,” on the last Sunday of June each year. The day has been joyous when celebrating our triumphs and angry when our freedoms have faced push-back. The NYIGT is proud to have been part of various social activist movements throughout its 75-year history— from civil rights to anti-war mobilizations. Social responsibility—if not activism—is in the DNA we carry from Fritz, Laura, and Paul Goodman. In recent years, we’ve held special meetings in response to the particular crises impacting our members and extended communities. These meetings continue today. In this spirit, I ask us to reflect on human freedom—the freedom to do, to be, to love, and to be free from hate. These ideals are never fully realized and are surely never secure. New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy We are the original Gestalt therapy institute established by Fritz and Laura Perls in 1952. As we were then so are we now a teachinglearning community where we explore everevolving Gestalt theory as experienced in and expressed through the practice of therapy group work and organizational development. Presentations mine the history of Gestalt theory and examine the larger intellectual context within which current theory is developing. Anyone with an interest in Gestalt ideas applications and practices is invited to join our community and membership organization.
