Juneteenth is a significant U.S. holiday observed on June 19th each year. It marks the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and proclaimed freedom for all enslaved African Americans. The Emancipation Proclamation had already been issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, but it took over two years for the news to reach Texas. Juneteenth is both a celebration of resilience and a call to action. It is a reminder that freedom and justice have not always been accessible and available for all. We join the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT) and others across the country in solidarity with efforts to eliminate disparities in donation and transplantation. Together we can create a more inclusive transplant community that celebrates the diversity of our nation and ensures equal access to life-saving treatments for all.
