At Alan Day Community Garden, the Farm to School program brings life to learning. Every fall, with the help of teachers from Guy E. Rowe Elementary, Alan Day educators, and a circle of volunteers, second and third graders walk down to the garden to explore where food really comes from. They learn about soil, pollinators, and nutrition by doing—digging, planting, harvesting, and tasting the results of their work. These photos are of sixth graders who planted potatoes. Months later they dug them up and donated them to a local Food Pantry. The Farm to School program and others alike plant the seeds of generosity and community—and they’re only possible through local support.
