Two years ago, Newton Eshivachi was working as a farmer when he saw our “Wasanii wa Mtaani” open call for artists. Though he only had pen and watercolor sketches to submit, his talent and unique voice immediately stood out. We exhibited his drawings as part of our showcase of emerging artists at Alliance Française. He completed our artist training program and became a member of Uweza Art Gallery. The gallery was a lifeline, providing access to materials, mentorship, and a network of other artists. This week, he returned to Alliance Française to exhibit alongside renowned Kenyan artist Joseph Bertiers, a mentor he has long admired. Their joint exhibition, “Crossed Perspectives on Kenyan Society,” is a dialogue on Kenya’s past and present from the viewpoints of two different generations. Newton considers this moment a “stamp on his artistic path” and we couldn’t agree more.
