Dear Northeast Illinois Council family, It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Captain James A. Lovell Jr. on August 7, 2025, at the age of 97. Last fall, we were honored to present Captain Lovell with NEIC’s Service to the Nation Award in recognition of his remarkable contributions to Scouting and to space exploration. Jim lived the values of Scouting every day. As a U.S. Navy pilot and NASA astronaut, he flew on Gemini 7 and 12, orbited the Moon on Apollo 8, and famously commanded Apollo 13. In the face of crisis, his calm leadership and quick thinking turned potential tragedy into one of the greatest survival stories in space history. Beyond the headlines, Jim was always a Scout at heart. He gave his time generously, inspired generations of young people, and stood as a strong supporter of Scouting. He often shared how Scouting helped prepare him for the challenges he faced in space and throughout life. We are grateful that our Scouting family had the chance to honor him while he was with us. His legacy will continue to inspire Scouts to dream big, lead with courage, and face every challenge with steady resolve.
