PEEK A BOO This cutie was just one of the many evaluated last week for surgery. A gift we love giving moms who give birth to cleft babies. Their child is no different and deserves nothing less than our best. The grim reality is so many of these mothers are young. The average age of a mother in Guatemala is just 20 years old. In 2024 there were 117,000 births to mothers ages 10-19. There are some very dark and unfortunate situations that have caused this dilemma in undeveloped areas. Seeing a teen mom who is still a child herself, uneducated and trying to navigate motherhood and caring for her baby born with a cleft is REAL. We see mothers who are 12,13 or 14 years of age, bringing their little one to us. There’s a story behind every smile. We don’t ignore the darkness, but focus on being a ray of light.
