The Growing Stage Theatre for Young Audiences Inc., also known as The Children’s Theatre of New Jersey, is a nonprofit professional performing arts center dedicated to engaging young audiences through theatre. As a member of Actors' Equity Association, the organization provides opportunities for individuals to participate in and learn from the arts.

History

Founded in 1982 by Executive Director Stephen L. Fredericks, The Growing Stage began its journey at the Black River Playhouse and the Williamson School in Chester, New Jersey. Over the years, it has grown into a prominent cultural fixture in northwestern Morris County. The company moved from its initial locations to the Williamson Building, where it spent ten years before finding a permanent home.

In the early years, The Growing Stage consisted of a small staff and volunteers who worked together to bring professional theatre to children and their families. The company also established a touring program that reached over a thousand students in its first year. By the late 1990s, The Growing Stage became an associate member of the New Jersey Theatre Group, a coalition of professional theaters in the state.

Facilities and Achievements

The Growing Stage is unique in New Jersey as it owns its own facility, The Palace Theatre, which it purchased and restored. The historic Palace features a 240-seat theatre, a balcony/art gallery with hand-painted murals, a modern concession area, rehearsal space, classrooms, and administrative offices[2].
