Whether inviting experts into the classroom or venturing out to explore the greater Philadelphia area, 5th grade teacher Varley is a natural at igniting curiosity in her students. Her immersive "Adventures in Learning" approach is based on her training with Project Zero, part of Harvard's Graduate School of Education, whose goal is to teach students the thinking routines they need for deep learning. Some of the routines our 5th graders have been practicing in the first months of school include Seeing, Thinking, and Wondering, as well as What's the Big Idea and Why Does It Matter. Honing these critical thinking skills across academic subjects allows our students to be well-prepared for their transition to middle school next year. (fb)
