Teaching children about facial birth defects helps spread acceptance and kindness. Here are 3 ways to help your child be an ally to someone with a facial difference: Teach about diversity. This includes facial birth defects, and also all types of diversity from race to religion to physical disabilities to neurodiversity. We are, in fact, all different, and that is a wonderful thing that is to be embraced, not feared. Take the first step. You can demonstrate how to treat others by making eye contact, smiling, saying hello. Kids with facial birth defects just want to be treated like kids, period. Encourage questions. Kids are curious by nature and might ask some questions that can make others feel uncomfortable. It’s a good idea to let them know that if they have questions about someone’s appearance or behavior, it’d be best to wait till a private time to ask you. But in the case that your child does ask a question that is easily overheard—and children often do!—it’s best to answer with facts. For example, if your child just asked, "why does her face look like that?" you can respond with a casual, "She was born that way, just like you were born with brown hair. That’s called cleft palate.
