On September 30, 1854, the Ojibwe of Lake Superior and the United States entered into a treaty signed at La Pointe on Madeline Island. Today’s events on Mooningwanekaaning, at Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, and in other communities commemorate the Treaty of 1854, which created permanent homelands for the Lake Superior Anishinaabe and reserved property rights in the ceded territory.
