Willie, a cancer survivor from Calumet City, was recognized at Soldier Field on Sunday as our special guest during the Bear Down Flag Ceremony. He helped unfurl the giant flag at the Chicago Bears game with his son, Justin, by his side while other family and fans cheered from the stands. The experience marks the end of about a year of treatment for Willie, who was shocked to learn last year he had not one but two forms of cancer. After feeling a lump in his breast, Willie suspected breast cancer as he has a family history and knew the disease can also occur in men. A scan confirmed the breast cancer, but to his shock, it also revealed a second diagnosis: oropharyngeal cancer, a cancer in the tongue or throat. With the support of his family and care team at Advocate Christ Medical Center, Willie received a mastectomy and completed treatment for his oropharyngeal cancer. This fall, he’ll receive some additional treatment for the breast cancer. “It’s tough to go to the doctor and wind up with two cancers,” Willie said. “But I’ve spent a year fighting and I’m grateful to have caught this and have a great team behind me – my family and my care team.” Willie's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of knowing your risk factors and family history and reaching out to your doctor when something doesn’t feel right. As he continues his journey with strength and resilience, we’re wishing him good health ahead and celebrating the courage that brought him to this powerful moment at Soldier Field. (fb)
