The Freedom Fund
The Freedom Fund is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating modern slavery. Founded in 2013 by Humanity United, Legatum, and Walk Free, it operates as a collaborative fund to mobilize knowledge, capital, and willpower in the fight against modern slavery.
Mission and Values
The Freedom Fund's mission is to support the most effective frontline efforts to end slavery by identifying and investing in community-led initiatives. It focuses on protecting vulnerable populations, liberating and reintegrating those enslaved, prosecuting perpetrators, and dismantling systems that permit slavery.
Programs
The Freedom Fund's strategy includes several key programs:
- Hotspot Projects: These involve partnering with community-based organizations in regions with high concentrations of modern slavery. Current hotspots include Brazil, central Nepal, Ethiopia, Myanmar, northern India, Rajasthan, southern India, southeastern Nepal, Thailand, Kenya, and Indonesia.
- Global Initiatives: These initiatives aim to tackle systemic issues that allow slavery to persist. They include efforts to improve supply chain transparency, legal strategies, and mental health support for survivors.
- Movement Building Initiatives: These initiatives focus on strengthening the global anti-slavery infrastructure by providing platforms, tools, and knowledge to enable organizations to work together more effectively.
Impact
As of its first decade, the Freedom Fund has directly impacted over 1.65 million people and supported 225 frontline anti-slavery organizations across 16 countries. It has also played a significant role in policy changes affecting millions more.
Funding
The organization is supported by individuals, foundations, and government agencies. Notable supporters include the Children's Investment Fund, the Stardust Fund, the Cassiopeia Foundation, and a transformative gift from MacKenzie Scott and Dan Jewett.
Leadership
The Freedom Fund is led by its CEO, Nick Grono, a prominent figure in the global anti-slavery movement. Grono previously served as the CEO of the Walk Free Foundation and has been instrumental in building the global anti-slavery movement.

What does it take to shift systems that allow exploitation to persist? In this video, Louise Hemfrey, Freedom Fund Program Manager in Ethiopia, outlines our approach to protecting child domestic workers (CDWs) in Ethiopia. Child domestic work is a range of household chores and care work performed by children within the homes of employers or guardians. Too often CDWs are exploited and working in very difficult situations. They work long hours, with no access to education, and isolated in their employer’s home, with limited connection and social interactions, they are vulnerable to violence and depression . The Freedom Fund supports local partners to improve identification and protection systems, to better identify and monitor CDWs at risk and reduce the worst forms of exploitation. We also provide comprehensive shelter services and reunification of children with their families. Through meetings between employers and CDWs, reflection and dialogues with employers and recruiters, community campaigns, empowering law enforcement units, advocacy and lobbying initiatives, the Freedom Fund seeks to shift the perception and treatment of CDWs in Ethiopia. We raise capital to direct funding and other forms of support to regions with high rates of modern slavery around the world. In each region, we convene a network of grassroots organisations to collaborate on shared objectives, multiplying their resources, impact and influence. In Kenya, we are working with 12 local partners to create an empowered collective of child domestic workers, their allies, civic organisations and government institutions to end abuse and exploitation. Find out more about our work in Kenya through the link in bio. (fb)

As part of a wider program of monitoring and evaluation all of our partners report into a common set of metrics. Each year we will publish highlights of our impact in the annual impact report together with key insights across all of our hotspots. We invest in frontline organisations and movements to reduce modern slavery. We are a global collaborative fund with the sole aim of helping end modern slavery.
