Today, we celebrate the mothers and mother figures in our lives. We’re inspired by women like Nelly Sarune, who at 70 years old provides for 20 children and teens who were vulnerable to neglect and exploitation. A passionate entrepreneur, she says, “I teach them responsibility. My desire is to see them grow. And when they grow, I know the Lord will bless me.” Amid the challenges of poverty, we rejoice that Christ-centered community and financial services like microfinance and savings groups can empower mothers to be the joy-filled role models and shepherds God has called them to be. Rev. Dr. Nelly Sarune joined SMEP Microfinance Bank PLC, HOPE’s microfinance institution in Kenya, in 2020. She used her loans to improve her café, chicken business, and build a home for her elderly mother. Nelly is a generous employer in her town, and her businesses help fund her ministry work—namely, the upkeep of a children’s home where she supports around 20 children and teens with housing, clothing, food, and education. “The children that I'm taking care of: we have started small shops, and it's my prayer, you know, for them to be future great businessmen and businesswomen. … So, what I am doing is empowering those young people.” We praise God for entrepreneurs like Nelly and the ripple effect their generosity is having in communities around the world.
