Sassy, the 24-year-old chestnut Thoroughbred Mare, is so happy to finally have a friend she doesn’t have to share with ANYONE else. Fortunately, Willy’s personal space bubble is very small. We are currently caring for 22 horses over the age of twenty. These seniors are happy and healthy for their age, but as you know, they often come with extra needs. In Sassy’s case, she battles allergies, an arthritic TMJ, and a picky appetite—but most of all, she cannot imagine life without an equine companion by her side. Sassy has recently “graduated” to a home where she finally found the companion she’s always longed for—a retired Thoroughbred gelding named Willy. Where you find Willy, you will, without a doubt, find Sassy. Placing elderly companion horses is never easy. But when it happens, it is one of the most rewarding parts of equine rescue. We are so grateful for the families who open their barns and their hearts to these senior horses—they truly make happy endings like Sassy’s possible. Because every barn and back pasture has a story.
