As you move along the interpretive path, take in its historic, botanic, and artistic features. See a fire relic from the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Couch tomb, kinetic sculptures by local artist Bernard Williams, and trail stops that ask you to contemplate aspects of Chicago’s personality, highlighting the city’s resilience, connections, and complexity. The landscaping features about 150 young trees and large beds of native plants, which attract birds and other pollinators and help preserve the natural history of the area. #OnThisDay in 1966, Little Walter performed in the Modern Chicago Blues Styles show at the University of Chicago. Born Marion Walter Jacobs (1930–68), he is considered one of the world’s most influential harmonica players. By amplifying his harmonica, Little Walter created a new sound and changed the role of the blues harp. He left home at a young age to play for tips throughout the South. Upon landing in Chicago, he teamed up with Muddy Waters, who helped the energetic teen hone his skills and learn to play with a band. Walter’s harp was critical to defining the Chicago blues sound.
