This Disability Pride Month, we want to highlight the importance of the connection between the disabled community and the LGBTQ+ community, our undeniable intersections, and the work we're doing at PFLAG NYC to fight for disability justice year-round. The first Disability Pride Day was celebrated in 1990, the year the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. 35 years later, we've made so much progress, but we still have a long way to go. From the process of coming out and challenges with representation and visibility to everyday needs and rights like housing, employment, education, marriage, and physical and mental healthcare, queer and trans people and people with disabilities have come up against many similar barriers to equity and dignity over the years and in the present. PFLAG NYC is deeply grateful to employ, care for, and work with people with disabilities and their loved ones. Whether we're running our support group for parents with kids at the intersection of trans identity and neurodivergence or writing a handbook for LGBTQ+ and disabled student support in schools, we're dedicated to disability justice for youth and adults this month and every month. Join us at The Urbane in Brooklyn for a free screening of Stonewall Forever on Thursday, July 31! In 1969, a riot at New York’s Stonewall Inn launched the gay rights movement and changed the course of history. Stonewall Forever brings together queer activists, experienced and new, to look at the movement for LGBTQ equality before, during, and after Stonewall. It explores how the activism of today stands on the shoulders of the activists who have come before. And it asks us all to recognize the legacy of Stonewall that remains today, when the struggle for queer rights is far from over.
