While in language school in Ethiopia, Dr. Florence prayed for God’s leading on how and with whom to begin the ministry. One night, God revealed to her in a dream the face of a man who would help her. She expected a doctor or another professional who could help her lay strategies for a medical ministry. Instead, the man was the watchman at the conference center where she lived. Curious, Dr. Florence asked him about medical missions, but all he spoke of was the children’s ministry he was involved in. Had she misheard God? She soon realized this was exactly where He was calling her. Remarkably, the man had also been praying for God to send him a partner. Together they began serving children. Around that time, they were invited to connect with Addis Kidan Baptist Church in the Mekanisa slum. At first, Dr. Florence dismissed it, but that humble church became one of the first partners of the ministry. That Christmas, she organized a Vacation Bible School, planning for 100 children. To her astonishment, 400 signed up. Many had to be turned away. Overwhelmed, she turned to Mekanisa Church for help, and they sent 10 facilitators.
