The last couple of days I have been working on Chance’s hind legs. He came here with proud flesh on his hind pasterns… it’s unsightly and frequently he rips off the ridges of the proud flesh and then it’s a prime opportunity for flies and infection. I wss trying to keep it sprayed with Aluspray.. but it got away from me.. cracked open and was messy. So.. it’s a bit of work twice a day. I start with a mild wash with Hibiclens, then rinse with the hose, then pat dry…Don’t pick at scabs! They must loosen on their own. …. for about a week, I use Furacin ointment under a wrap which does two things.. it softens the scabby crusty area while delivering antibiotic to the area. It’s of course messy .. it wants to attract dirt and shavings. After the scabby area is loosened up, I will give it a mild wash again with Hibiclens and see what I’ve got… You have to go day by day and see what kind of improvement you are getting. After these scabs and crusts are mostly gone.. I will use a drying agent… a sulfur cream ointment. I think I am going to have to stay on top of this .. just when you think you have it cleared up.. it goes rogue. (fb)
