Indigenous communities have always cultivated deep relationships with food and the land—nourishing both people and planet through knowledge passed down across generations. Today, we honor those traditions: original food systems rooted in seed saving, seasonal harvests, and cultural survival. These are the foundations of what we now call “healthy” or “local”—and they deserve more than a footnote. At The Sylvia Center, we teach with ingredients like squash, corn, beans, wild herbs, and foraged foods—not just because they’re nutrient-dense, but because they carry history. We’re deeply inspired by the work of The Sioux Chef, the Indigenous Food Lab, and NĀTIFSorg—leading a movement to restore Indigenous foodways, support Native chefs, and decolonize the plate. Over the past year, we've been rebuilding our recipe catalog to be more inclusive and rooted in heritage diets. Some of our favorite new recipes include Indigenous Succotash and a Beans & Greens Salad inspired by Penobscot Nation Chef Joe Robbins. 🌽 Food is memory. Food is resistance. Food is future. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #SeedSovereignty #FoodJustice #DecolonizeThePlate #SylviaCenter #TheSiouxChef #FoodIsResistance ➕ Learn more about how we’re building a more inclusive recipe catalog: [article link] (fb)
Across Latin America, food is more than nourishment—it’s language, memory, and identity. From pupusas to feijoada, sofrito to mole negro, every dish tells a story of migration, resilience, and community. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the richness and diversity of Latinx food traditions—recipes passed down through generations, shaped by Indigenous, African, and European roots. At The Sylvia Center, we believe students should see their cultures represented in the kitchen and on the plate. Over the past year, we’ve expanded our recipe catalog to honor authentic dishes from across the Latin American diaspora—centering flavor, heritage, and health. 🥘 Food is identity. Food is memory. Food is power. #HispanicHeritageMonth #LatinxHeritageMonth #LatineHeritage #CelebrateCulture #FoodIsCulture #HeritageRecipes #CulinaryRoots #RepresentationMatters #TSCRecipes #SylviaCenter ➕ Learn more about how we’re building a more inclusive recipe catalog: https://www.sylviacenter.org/culinary-diversity-representing-our-communities/ (fb)
