The Frida Cinema

Overview

The Frida Cinema is a non-profit art house movie theater located in Santa Ana, California. It was established as the only non-profit cinema in Orange County and is dedicated to enriching, connecting, and educating communities through the art of cinema. The theater is named after the renowned Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, reflecting her legacy of artistic expression and resilience.

History

The Frida Cinema opened its doors on February 21, 2014, in the heart of Downtown Santa Ana’s vibrant arts and culture district. It took over the former Fiesta Twin Theatre, rebranding it with a focus on independent, classic, cult, international, documentary, LGBTQ+, and anime films. The theater's opening marked a significant moment in the city's cultural landscape, offering a unique space for film enthusiasts and community engagement.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Frida Cinema temporarily closed in 2020 and later operated a drive-in theater in Tustin before reopening in April 2021. During the pandemic, the cinema implemented safety measures such as mask mandates and reduced capacity.

Facilities and Programming

The Frida Cinema features two 200-seat auditoriums equipped with state-of-the-art 4K Laser projection systems. The theater offers an extensive and diverse programming schedule, showcasing a wide range of films and hosting various events like art exhibits, discussion panels, Q&A sessions, and film festivals. It also participates in the monthly DTSA (Downtown Santa Ana) First Saturday ArtWalk.

The cinema collaborates with over 200 community partners, including schools and organizations, to provide a platform for diverse voices and stories. Its programming includes vintage blockbusters, cult classics, and independent films, catering to a diverse audience.

Community Engagement

The Frida Cinema plays a pivotal role in community engagement by fostering a cultural hub for art and film enthusiasts. Its volunteers are integral to its operations, contributing significantly to maintaining its robust program of events and screenings. The cinema offers opportunities for volunteering, internships, and school community service hours, attracting individuals interested in cinema and community service.

Financials and Operations

As a non-profit, The Frida Cinema relies on community support through memberships, donations, and volunteer involvement to sustain its mission. Donations to the organization are tax-deductible. In recent years, the cinema has reported revenue primarily from program services and contributions. The organization's leadership emphasizes transparency and diversity in governance, ensuring that The Frida Cinema remains a vibrant and inclusive cultural institution.

Leadership and Governance

The Frida Cinema's board of directors includes a diverse group of leaders from various backgrounds, ensuring a governance structure that aligns with the organization’s mission of inclusivity and community engagement. The board conducts formal orientations for new members and reviews conflict-of-interest policies annually.
