🪾Today we present to you the endemic Bauhinia haughtii!  🌺Haught’s Orchid Tree (Bauhinia haughtii) is only known from a handful of historical records. Although not a true orchid, the tree has beautiful red orchid-like flowers that stand out amongst the green backdrop of the tropical forest. 🔴Unfortunately, today, the only known living population of Haught’s Orchid Tree is found in the forests of Pata de Pajaro. The species is listed as Endangered by IUCN and Critically Endangered by the Ecuadorian Red List given its extremely limited distribution and the extent of deforestation across its range. 🙌Over the past 30 years, before TMA stepped in to protect the area, Pata de Pajaro was consistently being felled by community members living adjacent to its borders. These activities severely threatened the last remaining population of this critically endangered and endemic species. For this reason, TMA and our local community partners have moved quickly to map, protect, and propagate individuals of the last known population. 🌱Our ongoing conservation efforts aim to protect all remaining individuals found in and adjacent to Pata de Pajaro, and establish a local nursery to fuel an active reforestation project. 🥾This species was first documented in a previous expedition done in the early 90’s by @johnclark in Pata de Pájaro. We began with the creation of the Jama-Coaque Reserve in the southern part of the Corridor, which currently covers 2,965 acres. 🌳Our next step is to resurrect the nearly extinct Cerro Pata de Pájaro Protective Forest, in the northern part of the Corridor, which covers over 10,000 acres. 🙌Our goal now is to protect, restore, and connect the two protected areas together with local communities. 🌱All the necessary elements—personnel, strategic expertise, and field experience—are currently in action and capable of completing the corridor within the next ten years. 🦜What makes this place so special and why we have decided to dedicate our present and future work here?
