Indiana Speech Language Hearing Association Inc.
The Indiana Speech Language Hearing Association Inc. (ISHA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting speech-language pathologists and audiologists in Indiana. It is recognized for its efforts in enhancing the practice and understanding of communication sciences and disorders.
History
ISHA traces its roots back to the Indiana Speech Correction Association (ISCA), which later evolved to reflect broader professional disciplines. By 1943, ISCA helped establish licenses for Speech Correction and Hearing Therapy with the Indiana Board of Education. Over the years, ISHA has expanded its scope, incorporating language and also becoming recognized as a not-for-profit organization by 1970. It was officially recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in 1984[1].
Mission and Activities
ISHA works to promote the interests of its members through advocacy, professional development, and public education. It has been involved in various legislative efforts, including the establishment of a hearing aid fund and discussions regarding the scope of practice for speech-language pathologists. ISHA also supports its members through educational events and awards for long-term service[1].
Membership and Structure
As of 2009, ISHA had approximately 863 members. The organization introduced a new team structure that year and continues to engage in mentoring programs for students. It has also developed public relations materials to promote awareness about communication disorders[1].
Events and Advocacy
ISHA hosts annual conventions and workshops for its members to gain continuing education credits. The organization actively participates in state and national advocacy efforts, often collaborating with other associations and lobbying firms to influence policy decisions related to speech-language pathology and audiology practice[1][3].
ISHA has been engaged in efforts to protect the scope of practice for its professionals, ensuring that roles are defined clearly within the healthcare system[1].
Educational and Public Awareness Initiatives
One of ISHA's goals is to increase public awareness about speech, language, and hearing disorders. Historically, ISHA has used creative approaches, such as puppets, to convey these messages to the public[1]. Additionally, ISHA supports educational institutions and provides resources for students interested in pursuing careers in communication sciences and disorders[1].

Your ISHA Executive Board has been working diligently to learn more about the recent Medicare Part B changes and their impact on speech and hearing professionals in Indiana. Last week, we attended webinars hosted by ASHA and the Council of State Speech-Language-Hearing Association Presidents (CSAP) to learn from and with other state associations. Currently, ASHA is leading the advocacy effort, as this is a national issue related to a federally administered program. Their staff is working to secure a meeting with CMS to share the negative impacts of this new definition of providers who are eligible to bill Medicare. However, they NEED OUR HELP! If this change has personally impacted you or if you know of SLPs and organizations who have been affected, please share your stories. ASHA needs our stories to share with CMS. There are currently two ways to share your stories and feedback with ASHA. 1) You can fill out the Policy Impact Member Feedback Form here: www.asha.org/form/policy-impact-member-feedback 2) You can email states@asha.org You can also go to the ASHA website page titled "Medicare Updates Definition of Speech-Language Pathologist in Its Benefit Policy Manual" for the most up-to-date information from ASHA. If you have questions about what to do or need support from ISHA, please email us at admin@islha.org. (fb)
Recently, ASHA’s Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CFCC) distributed information regarding proposed changes to the 2020 Audiology Certification Standards and the 2020 Speech-Language Pathology Certification Standards due to federal executive orders that have resulted in legal scrutiny of terminology related to cultural competency, diversity, equity and inclusion. View Proposed Modifications to ASHA Certification Standards: https://www.asha.org/siteassets/certification/proposed-modifications-to-asha-certification-standards.pdf ISHA would like our members to be informed that they have the opportunity to provide feedback until Sunday, June 29, 2025. We invite you to submit your comments to ASHA's CFCC by using the survey link below. After reviewing the feedback received, the CFCC will vote on final changes and will inform certificate holders of the changes made as soon as possible.
