“Jeremy Frey: Woven” at the Bruce Museum explores Jeremy Frey's interest in striking a balance between tradition and innovation. Frey continually seeks ways to refine his approach and delve deeper into a given shape through increasingly complex designs. To arrive at a particular form, he drafts numerous concept drawings, develops custom molds, and troubleshoots new weaving techniques, such as the braiding of ash and cedar bark, while retaining recognizable roots in historical Wabanaki basketry, cultivating a style he calls “cutting-edge traditional.” Organized by the Portland Museum of Art, “Jeremy Frey: Woven” is the first major retrospective of the artist’s work. Explore Isamu Noguchi’s lesser-known but deeply evocative work in galvanized steel in “Isamu Noguchi: Metal the Mirror,” on view through November 16 at the Bruce Museum. Best known for his stone sculptures, this exhibition reveals #IsamuNoguchi’s consistent experimentation with new material and methods throughout his wide-ranging career. “Sky Mirror" shares an intention with Noguchi’s Garden Museum, which he described in 1983 as “a sort of transformation of space into a particular place of earth awareness and of our place in it.” Connected to the ground and reflecting the sky and its surroundings, the galvanized steel work brings artificial and living things into communion. “Isamu Noguchi: Metal the Mirror” is curated by Julia Mun, Assistant Curator, Art Bridges Foundation, with support from Ashley Holland, Curator and Director of Curatorial Initiatives, and Javier Rivero Ramos, Associate Curator.
