This Juneteenth, we reflect on the significance of this important day in American history and its ongoing impact on the fight for freedom, justice, and equality. Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day reminds us of the importance of knowledge, education, and stories in shaping a better, more inclusive world. As we celebrate, we encourage everyone to explore books that tell the stories of freedom, resilience, and Black history. About Us Nearly twothirds of lowincome families do not own any books for their children. Reading Is Fundamental Pittsburgh addresses this critical need by providing children with access to selfselected books creating positive environments that motivate children to develop a lifelong love of reading and engaging families in literacy practices in the home. By providing more than 80000 books and services to our citys most economically disadvantaged children RIF Pittsburgh is dedicated to reducing the literacy gap in our community and fostering a lifelong love of reading in the children we serve.
